About Fat Hat Clothing Company
Based in Quechee, Vermont, Fat Hat Clothing Company comes from humble beginnings. The idea for Fat Hat started when founder Joan Ecker’s mother began sending her pieces of wool fabric leftover from her swatch books. With no experience or background in fashion, Ecker came up with what would be known as The Original Fat Hat.
Ecker toured small craft shows every weekend, displaying her work and enthusiastically demonstrating her hats. As a result, Joan’s hats caught the attention of a New York Times writer. So much so, he wrote an article about them in the paper, and Joan’s idea took off.
41 years later, the Fat Hat brand is still thriving and has grown to include other types of apparel. Now, Fat Hat is recognized for its easy, comfy clothing that’s all made in the United States. To this day, Joan’s original philosophy on fashion rings true — if you’re comfortable with what you’re wearing, you’ll be comfortable with who you are.
To honor Ecker’s mother who passed away from lung cancer in 1987, Fat Hat Clothing Company began donating Fat Hats to chemo patients across the country. This project has enriched the mission of Fat Hat and the lives of Ecker and her team, increasing their impact and putting deeper meaning behind fashion.
